Three things to check on the tallow you own right now
- Leave it somewhere cool overnight, then try to take some out with one fingertip. If you need a nail or a spoon, there's nothing in that jar softening the set.
- Rub a little between two fingers. Feel for grain. That faint sandiness is fat that has re-crystallised unevenly, and you'll feel it again on your cheekbone.
- Read the back of the jar. Count the things in there that are actually feeding your skin, rather than just sealing it. On most jars the answer is one.

The questions tallow people actually ask.
Be straight with me: does it smell like beef?
Yes, a little. We'd rather tell you now than have you find out at the sink. There is no synthetic fragrance in this jar to hide behind, so what you smell is what's actually in it: rendered grass-fed fat, plus the earthy, slightly spiced note of the clove and hibiscus infusion. Most people find it settles within a minute or two of going on and nobody else notices it. Some people love it. A small number never make peace with it, and if that's you, tell us and we'll sort you out. If a heavily perfumed cream is what you want, we're honestly not the brand for you.
Why is yours softer than the tallow I have now?
Organic jojoba oil. It's a wax ester rather than a true oil, and blended into the tallow it softens how the fat sets, so the balm stays scoopable when it's cold and spreads without that sandy drag. That's the single change behind the two things switchers mention most: no grain, and no digging at a solid jar in winter.
Can collagen actually absorb through skin? I've read that it can't.
You've read correctly, about synthetic collagen. Isolated collagen molecules are far too large to pass the skin barrier, which is exactly why most collagen creams disappoint. MOUNTAIN isn't using that. The collagen here comes from purified grass-fed bone marrow, which is an animal fat, carried in tallow, which is an animal fat your skin already recognises. Nothing has to be forced through anything. It's delivered the way your skin handles fat every day of its life.
I already use tallow and my skin is happy. Why change?
If all you want is a barrier balm, keep your jar, it's doing that job. MOUNTAIN is for the point where moisture isn't the problem any more, and thinning is. After 35 your skin makes less collagen every year, and no amount of plain rendered fat changes that. This is tallow with something in it for that specific problem.
Will it clog my pores?
Tallow is generally well tolerated because it's so close to your own sebum, and our customers with combination and blemish-prone skin report it hasn't caused congestion. Everyone's skin is its own thing, so patch test a small area first, as you would with any new product.
How long does a jar last?
Longer than you'd think, because you use so much less of it. A pea-sized amount covers face, neck and hands. Most customers get months out of one jar using it morning and night.
