You went to tallow for something whole, simple and ancestral. But flip most "tallow" jars over and the label tells another story: distilled essential oils, synthetic preservatives, emulsifiers, fragrance and fillers, the very things you were trying to leave behind. Flip the jar over
Most "tallow" is barely tallow.
The word "tallow" on the front sells the ancestral dream. The ingredient list on the back often tells a very different story. Once you know what to look for, you start seeing the same handful of shortcuts on jar after jar:
- Essential oils, distilled and concentrated down from the plant, harsh on skin and a world away from a gentle whole-plant infusion
- Synthetic preservatives added to give water-heavy creams a longer shelf life
- Emulsifiers and stabilisers whose only job is to stop cheap fillers from splitting apart
- Water and fillers bulking out the jar, so there is far less real tallow in there than you think
- "Fragrance" or "parfum", a catch-all label that can hide dozens of undisclosed synthetics
If it needs a lab to hold it together, it isn't ancestral.

The ancestral way
Whole plants. Not distilled oils.
There is a real difference between an essential oil and a whole-plant infusion. An essential oil is a plant stripped down to a concentrated, volatile extract. An infusion is the whole herb, flower, peel or root, gently steeped into grass-fed tallow so its full character transfers slowly and softly, the way it was done long before laboratories. Honest answers
The ingredient questions people always ask.
Do you use essential oils?
No. Every botanical is added as a whole-plant infusion, the actual herb, flower, peel or root steeped into the tallow, rather than a concentrated distilled oil. It's gentler on skin and truer to how these ingredients were used for generations.
Are there any synthetic preservatives?
No synthetic preservatives. The formulas rely on their stable tallow and botanical base rather than shelf-life chemicals. Store them somewhere cool and use clean, dry fingers, and a little goes a very long way.
What about emulsifiers or fillers?
None of the emulsifiers, stabilisers or bulking fillers you'll find padding out cheaper creams. What's in the jar is what's on the label, with nothing added just to change texture or stretch the tallow further.
Why is there jojoba if you avoid oils?
Jojoba is a liquid plant wax that's remarkably close to your skin's own sebum, cold-pressed and organic, not a processed inflammatory seed oil. It helps the tallow spread beautifully while keeping every formula whole and skin-friendly.
Is every single ingredient natural?
The base is grass-fed tallow and organic botanicals, and the formulas are free from synthetics and synthetic fragrance. A few functional ingredients, like magnesium and menthol, are included in their pure, recognisable form, never hidden behind a "fragrance" or "parfum" label.
