Whipped Tallow vs Tallow Balm

But… Is Your Tallow Whipped?!

You may have seen the recent articles claiming that whipped tallow isn’t as good as tallow balms. And honestly? Some of those critiques aren’t totally off. 👀

Whipped tallow can be:

- Overly aerated — light and fluffy, but not as rich
- Crumbly once it sets — flaky instead of silky
- Misleading in big jars — it looks like more product than it actually is

We get it. None of that sounds ideal.

But... Tallow Balms Aren’t Perfect Either

Here’s the thing—traditional tallow balms aren’t automatically flawless just because they’re not whipped. They can come with their own set of challenges:

- Too hard — some balms are so solid that they can be tough to get out of the jar, especially in cold climates and need quite a bit of warming in your hands before they spread nicely
- Crumbly or dry — even a solid balm can break apart if the formulation isn’t quite right

So you see: even tallow balms that aren’t whipped can be dry or crumbly if they’re not formulated well. So it’s not just about whipped vs. solid—it’s about crafting the right balance of ingredients.

Nuance matters

When it comes to tallow, the difference between “good” and “bad” isn’t as simple as whipped versus solid. Texture, richness, and performance all depend on subtle details: how the tallow is sourced, formulation, how ingredients are blended, and even how it’s stored. Overlooking these nuances can lead to misleading assumptions—like thinking a whipped product is automatically inferior, or a balm is automatically perfect. Understanding these small but important factors helps you choose tallow that truly nourishes your skin, rather than just buying based on labels or appearances.

Blending ≠ Whipping

At Myoko Embodied, we blend our tallow. But we’re very clear: our product is not whipped tallow.

Blending is intentional. It allows our ingredients to fully marry and creates that rich, melt-into-skin texture we’re known for. We have spent many years of trial and error to arrive at our current method of formulation. Unlike whipped tallow, our products are not aerated, so you get the full density and nourishment without the fluffiness. Unlike balms, we spend more intentional time infusing our ingredients to avoid hard crumbly textures.

Formulation Matters

There’s more to perfect tallow than what those articles made for marketing want you to believe. The difference between a rich, silky product and a crumbly one comes down to:

- The quality of the tallow (grass-fed, ethically sourced is always best) and how the tallow is rendered/ prepared.
- How ingredients are blended or combined
- The texture and melt-on-skin performance

So next time someone tells you whipped tallow is “bad,” remember: texture, richness, and performance are about how it’s made, not just whether the producer uses a blender.

Our Promise
